Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Potentilla fruiticosa Blink

    A spreading deciduous shrub to 60cm tall, with pinnate leaves and pink-flushed white flowers in summer and early autumn.

  • Potentilla fruiticosa Lovely Pink

    A vigorous rounded shrub growing to a height and diameter of 0.8 to 1m. It only needs a light pruning at the end of winter. The foliage is dark green. Its main attributes are not only its abundant flowers from the end of spring to the first frosts but also its beautiful long lasting soft pink monochrome, the colour might fade in bright sunlight, but swiftly regains its colour. The plant is hardy in all regions.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Katherine Dykes

  • Potentilla fruticosa McKay's White

    Creamy white flowers. Bushy, compact, deciduous shrub with pinnate leaves. Flowers are saucer shaped and come in a variety of colours, yellow being most common. These hardy plants flower continuously from June through October with little preference to soil or water conditions.

  • Potentilla fruticosa Princess

    Cinquefoil. A low-growing shrub with dark green leaves. Pretty, cup-shaped, pale pink flowers fading to white in full sun from late spring to mid-autumn. Height 60cm. Spread 1m. Flowers from May to July. Deciduous.

    Alpine Mint Bush. A bushy shrub with tiny dark green leaves. strongly scented when crushed. Broadly tubular white flowers with pretty purple and yellow markings inside. Height 30-40cm. Spread 30-40cm. Flowers from June to August. Evergreen.

  • Prunus cerasifera Pissardii Nigra

    Cherry Plum. Myrobalan. A spreading tree with dark purple leaves red when young. Pretty pink flowers in early spring. Height 10m. Spread 10m. Flowers from March to April. Deciduous. Foliage colour Purple. Hardy.

  • Prunus Hally Jollivette

    Hally Jolivette is an attractive medium-sized flowering cherry. It features bright white semi-double flowers. By the standards of ornamental cherries the blossom is quite long-lasting, regularly exceeding 2 weeks.

  • Prunus incisa Kojo-no-mai

  • Prunus Kanzan

    Ornamental Cherry. An upright half standard with bronze leaves when young. Pretty, huge, double deep pink flowers from mid to late spring. Flowers from April to May. Deciduous.

  • Prunus kurilensis Ruby

    Flowering Almond. A densely branched shrub with dark green leaves. Pretty bowl-shaped pink flowers in early spring followed by red fruit. Height 1.5m. Spread 1.5m.

  • Prunus laurocerasus Otto Luyken

    Cherry Laurel. A compact, bushy, evergreen shrub with glossy narrow green leaves. Clip annually to keep this half std to shape. Fragrant white flowers on upright spikes in spring, followed by red fruit ripening to black. Height 1m. Good in shade or sun. Harmful if eaten.

  • Prunus lusitanica

    Portuguese Laurel. A dense bushy shrub with glossy, dark green leaves. Fragrant white flowers on pendent racemes in early summer, followed by red fruit ripening to black. Height 3m. Spread 2m. Flowers from June to July. Fruits from July. Evergreen. For hedging plant 50cm apart.

  • Prunus lusitanica Myrtifolia

    Large evergreen, slow growing bushy shrub or if left will grow into A dense conical shaped tree. The plant will form oval to elliptic glossy green foliage and bares racemes of fragrant flowers borne of red tipped shoots followed by fruits. The small leaved form responds well to pruning and is also excellent for topiary and hedging. A form of Portuguese Laurel that is very easy to grow and maintain. Seed kernels harmful if eaten.

    Bird Cherry. A spreading tree with dark green leaves that turn red or yellow in autumn. Pretty cup-shaped white flowers in late spring followed by glossy blue-black fruit. Height 15m. Spread 10m.   • Prunus pissardii Nigra

    Dark purple foliage and pretty pale, delicate pink flowers adorn this bush in May. Wonderful for foliage contrast, can be clipped to shape.
