Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Salix Erythroflexuosa

    Willow. A spreading tree with arching branches and spirally twisted orange-yellow stems. Produces yellow catkins in spring with the narrow glossy green leaves. Height 1.5m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from March to May. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Salix gracilistyla Melanostachys

    Willow. An upright shrub with grey-green leaves turning glossy green. Produces attractive black catkins with brick-red anthers in spring, before the leaves.

  • Salix integra Flamingo

    Striking variegated foliage. Shoot tips are covered in cream leaves which mature pink then green. Clip regularly. Moist soil. Sun or shade.

  • Sambucus Chocolate Marzipan

    Large marzipan-scented flower heads later than normal between July and October. Dark beige foliage with a white mid-stripe.

  • Sambucus Golden Spark

    It is a medium growing shrub with bright golden variegations at the tips of each leaf. These turn creamy yellow as the season progresses. The Sambucus has masses of white flowers in early summer, which can be used in the same way as native elderflower.

  • Sambucus nigra Aurea

    Black Elder. An upright bushy shrub with golden yellow leaves. Musk-scented white flowers in early summer, followed by glossy black fruit. Height 6m. Spread 6m. Flowers from May to June. Fruits from August Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Sambucus nigra Black Lace

    Black Elder. An upright bushy shrub with young leaves flushed dark purple. turning red in autumn. Gorgeous pink flowers in early summer followed by glossy black fruit suitable for wine making. Height 3m. Spread 6m. Flowers from May to June.

  • Sambucus nigra Black Tower

    This tall and slender deciduous shrub is primarily grown for its foliage, which emerges green in spring, but (if exposed to lots of sun) will soon turn a deep burgundy colour. In early summer, the stems are crowned with big, flattened sprays of lightly perfumed, small pink flowers. Height 2.5m. Spread 1.5m.

  • Sambucus nigra Thunder Cloud

    Black Elder. Dark, chocolate-purple leaves which colour up best in a sunny position and large clusters of rich pinkish-white flowers in summer.

  • Sambucus racemosa Plumosa Aurea

    Red-berried Elder. A bushy shrub with finely cut leaves, bronze when young, turning golden yellow. Small creamy yellow flowers in spring, followed by glossy red fruit. Height 3m. Spread 3m. Sun or shade. Flowers from April to May.

  • Santolina chamaecyparissus Lemon Fizz

    Cotton Lavender. A compact rounded shrub with grey-white leaves. Lemon-yellow flowerheads from mid to late summer. Height 60cm. Spread 60cm. Flowers from July to August. Evergreen. Frost hardy. Planting instructions Back-fill with soil mixed with peat and a suitable fertiliser.

  • Sarcococca hookeriana Purple Stem

    A suckering, evergreen shrub that gradually forms a dense thicket. The new shoots are flushed with an attractive dark purple-pink hue which gradually fades as the stems mature. The stems are clothed with slender, tapering, dark green leaves and in winter sweetly scented, pink-tinged, white flowers appear, which are followed by rounded blue-black fruit.

  • Sarcococca hookeriana White Gem

    Large glossy, rich green leaves and highly scented white flowers in winter that are followed by spherical, glossy, red berries that ripen to black. Tough and tolerant of most conditions, it is especially valuable for shadier areas.
