Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Hebe Golden Nugget

    A compact, evergreen shrub to around 50cm high, forming a dense mound of fine, branching stems with tiny, scale-like, yellow-green leaves. Small spikes of white flowers are produced in early summer.

  • Hebe Katrina

    A rounded shrub with green and gold leaves. The plant produces an abundance of stunning mauve flowers in summer and autumn. Will tolerate some shade. Height 50cm. Evergreen.

  • Hebe Mrs Winder

    A compact rounded evergreen dark stemmed shrub with dark green leaves, dark purple-red when young. Spikes of violet-blue flowers in late summer. Height 1m. Spread 1.2m. Flowers from July to August. Evergreen. Frost hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Hebe wiri Celebration

    Half-hardy, it forms a tight mound of variegated foliage, from which clusters of purple-pink flowers on erect stems appear in late spring. Grow Hebe ’Celebration' in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered site, in full to partial shade. It may need protection in winter.

  • Hebe wiri Mist

    A dwarf bushy evergreen shrub with golden green, small leaves and spikes of white flowers in mid to late summer. Height 45cm. Spread 50cm. Flowers from June to August. Evergreen.

  • Hebe x andersonii Nana

    Small, evergreen shrub with green leaves and purple-violet flowers spikes in summer into early winter.

  • Hebe x franciscana

    A spreading shrub with light to mid-green leaves and flowers from summer to autumn. Height 1.2m. Spread 1.2m. Flowers from June to September. Evergreen Frost hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Hebe x hybrida Hanne

    Bushy, green foliage with purple-pink flower spikes. Height 80cm x 75 cm (2ft 8in x 2ft 6in). Flowers up to September. Great for containers or borders.

  • Hebe x hybrida Tricolour

    Forms a bushy, evergreen shrub 1m or more high. The broad spear-shaped leaves are glossy, grey-green, long, with irregular cream margins. The flowers are reddish-purple, July to December.

  • Hebe x hybrida Variegata

    A rounded evergreen shrub with tiny grey-green, cream margined leaves. Large pale lilac-blue flowers in summer. Height 1m. Spread 1m. Flowers from June to August. Evergreen. Frost hardy.

  • Heptacodium miconioides

    A large shrub or small tree with peeling bark and whorls of small fragrant white flowers at the end of branches in late summer. With good weather the calyx enlarges and turns pinky-red after flowering. Prune in March. Sun to partial shade.

  • Hibiscus syriacus Eleonore

    A vigorous upright shrub up to 3m high, with deciduous, three-lobed green leaves, and single flowers,10cm across, with pure white petals and cream stamens, from midsummer to autumn; honeybees and bumblebees may visit for pollen.

  • Hibiscus syriacus French Cabaret Pastel

    Tree Hollyhock. Unique, relatively new variety originating from France. It has stunning flowers, almost double with interesting scalloped edges. It flowers in late summer through to early autumn just when other plants and flowers are starting to retreat.

    Tree Hollyhock. Large, single, white mallow-like flowers up to 12cm across with a lacy centre from August to October. Full sun, humus-rich, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil, average to fast-growing.

  • Hibiscus syriacus Woodbridge

    Tree Hollyhock. An erect shrub with toothed dark green leaves and single pink flowers with a pink eye from mid-summer to autumn. Height 1.8m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from July to October. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Hippophae rhamnoides

    Sea Buckthorn. As hedge plants, are a popular native species which has unusual silvery grey foliage as well as strong thorns and masses of colourful orange berries. Height 1-4m.

  • Hoheria sexstylosa

    Ribbonwood. A pretty evergreen shrub with glossy, toothed green leaves and clusters of fragrant, starry white flowers with from mid to late summer. Height 8m. Spread 6m. Flowers from July to August. Evergreen. Frost hardy. Sheltered Site.

  • Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris

    Climbing Hydrangea. A climbing shrub with dark green leaves turning yellow in autumn and domed clusters of white flowers in summer. Height 15m. Spread 3m. Flowers from July to August. Deciduous. Hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.
