Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Rhododendron Roseum Elegans

    A vigorous, compact, and fast growing variety. Lavender pink flowers bloom in late May and June. Excellent foliage and quite hardy. Tolerant of extremes in cold, heat, and humidity.

  • Rhododendron Scintillation

    An evergreen shrub with dense clusters of funnel-shaped, pale pink flowers with a pinkish brown flare in the throat in early summer. Height 2.2m. Spread 2.2m. Flowers from May to June. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Rhododendron Vulcan's Flame

    'Vulcan's Flame' is more heat tolerant and blooms at a younger age. The flowers, however, are just as outstanding - a bright red and they are held above the deep green foliage.

  • Rhododendron White

    Compact habit shrub. Flowers are white in May. Acid soil. Good in sun or light shade. Evergreen.

  • Rhododendron Wilgen's Ruby

    Vigorous, hardy evergreen shrub to about 5 feet in 10 years. Hardy. Flowers best in partial shade. Good green foliage. Very deep red flowers with brown blotching in mid to late May.

  • Rhododendron yakushimanum

    'Yakushimanum' is a compact, dome-shaped small shrub with silvery young foliage becoming dark green with a thick fawn tomentum beneath. Rounded trusses of pure white flowers open from bright pink buds in mid spring.

  • Rhododendron yakushimanum Dopey Hybrid

    An upright evergreen shrub dense clusters of pretty, bell-shaped, glossy red flowers with dark brown spots in late spring. Height 2m. Spread 2m. Flowers from April to May. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Rhododendron yakushimanum Dreamland

    An upright evergreen shrub dense clusters of pretty, bell-shaped, pale peach flowers with dark brown spots in late spring. Height1.2m. Spread 1.2m. Flowers from April to May. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Rhododendron yakushimanum Fantastica

    Stunning red flowers with a paler centre fading to an attractive pink in May. We think this is one of Hachmann's best hybrids and one of our favourites. It has dark foliage with gorgeous woolly indumentum below. Height 100-120cm in 10 years.

  • Rhus typhina Dissecta

    Stag's Horn Sumach. An upright suckering shrub or tree with divided dark green finely cut leaves eaves turning orange-red in autumn. Yellow-green flowers are followed by crimson-red fruit on female plants. Height 5m. Spread 6m. Female.

  • Rhus typhina Tiger Eyes

    Lemon-lime foliage, fuzzy stems, and intense fall colour make this tree stunning.. It grows into an upright, rounded form about 6 feet tall and as wide. In Autumn leaves turn yellow, scarlet, and orange. Flowers are yellowish green and followed, on female plants, by hairy, dark red fruit. This plant spreads by suckers and can be invasive. The species is native to North America. H 10-15' Spread 15-30'

  • Salix babylonica Tortuosa

    Twisted Willow. An upright tree with twisted branches and twisted bright green leaves. Produces yellow-green catkins in spring. Height 5m. Spread 2m. Deciduous. Sun or partial shade.

  • Salix caprea Pendula 1/4 std

    Goat Willow. Great Sallow. A weeping British native tree with yellow or silver catkins in spring, before the leaves. A dwarf tree that gets barely any taller, but a little broader. Amazing catkins in spring.

  • Salix Erythroflexuosa

    Willow. A spreading tree with arching branches and spirally twisted orange-yellow stems. Produces yellow catkins in spring with the narrow glossy green leaves. Height 1.5m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from March to May. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Salix integra Hakuro-nishiki

    Standard tree with striking variegated foliage. Shoot tips are covered in cream leaves which mature pink then green. Clip regularly. Moist soil. sun or shade.

  • Salix udensis Golden Sunshine

    Natural yellow-leaved mutation of the species, found in Japan in 2005. This attractive, vigorous willow forms an erect, deciduous, hardy shrub. In early spring, small, pale, silver-yellow catkins show before leaves emerge. The lance shaped leaves appear chartreuse green in spring which turn a brighter yellow during the autumn prior to falling. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 3m (9').

  • Sambucus Golden Spark

    It is a medium growing shrub with bright golden variegations at the tips of each leaf. These turn creamy yellow as the season progresses. The Sambucus has masses of white flowers in early summer, which can be used in the same way as native elderflower.

  • Sambucus nigra Aurea

    Black Elder. An upright bushy shrub with golden yellow leaves. Musk-scented white flowers in early summer, followed by glossy black fruit. Height 6m. Spread 6m. Flowers from May to June. Fruits from August Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Sambucus nigra Black Lace

    Black Elder. An upright bushy shrub with young leaves flushed dark purple. turning red in autumn. Gorgeous pink flowers in early summer followed by glossy black fruit suitable for wine making. Height 3m. Spread 6m. Flowers from May to June.

  • Sarcococca hookeriana Purple Gem

    Christmas Box. Sweet Box. A compact suckering shrub with narrow. glossy dark evergreen leaves. Clusters of fragrant white flowers in winter followed by black or blue-black fruit. Height 1.5m.

  • Sarcococca hookeriana Purple Stem

    A suckering, evergreen shrub that gradually forms a dense thicket. The new shoots are flushed with an attractive dark purple-pink hue which gradually fades as the stems mature. The stems are clothed with slender, tapering, dark green leaves and in winter sweetly scented, pink-tinged, white flowers appear, which are followed by rounded blue-black fruit.

  • Sarcococca ruscifolia

    Christmas Box. Sweet Box. A dense, bushy shrub with arching stems of glossy dark green leaves. Clusters of very fragrant, creamy white flowers in winter followed by dark red fruit. Height 1m. Spread 1m. Flowers from January to February. Fruits from March. Evergreen.

  • Skimmia japonica Antarctica

    Flower buds September to March Flowers April to May. Berries October to March. Evergreen.

  • Skimmia japonica Red Diamond

    Evergreen bush with aromatic dark green leaves. Hermaphrodite. Clusters of small white flowers in spring. followed by deep crimson berries. Requires partial shade & very peaty soil.

  • Skimmia japonica Rubella

    A male evergreen shrub with shiny dark green leaves, margined red. Fragrant white flowers open from dark red buds. Height 6m. Spread 6m. Flowers April - May. Fruits June. Shaded Site. Hardy. Back-fill with soil mixed with peat and a suitable fertiliser.

  • Sophora microphylla Sun King

    Small evergreen tree eventually reaching 3m. Long pinnate leaves. Pea-like yellow flowers in pendant racemes in late winter and early spring. Sheltered sunny spot.

  • Spiraea japonica Gold Flame

    A dense shrub with bronze-red young leaves, turning bright yellow then mid-green. Clusters of dark pink flowers from mid to late summer. Height 75cm. Spread 75cm. Flowers from July to August. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Spiraea japonica Golden Princess

    A dense shrub with bronze-red young leaves later bright yellow, turning red in autumn. Clusters of bright purplish pink flowers from mid to late summer. Height 60-90cm. Spread 60-90cm. Flowers from July to August. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Spiraea japonica Little Princess

    A dense shrub with dark green leaves. Clusters of rose-pink flowers from mid to late summer. Height 50cm. Spread 50cm. Flowers from July to August. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Spiraea nipponica June Bride

    Hardy deciduous shrub with dense, arching branches. Its one of the early varieties, grown for its mass of small dainty white flowers and arching stems that appear from late spring to early summer.

  • Spiraea nipponica Snowmound

    An arching shrub with rounded dark green leaves. Clusters of white flowers cover the plant in mid-summer. Height 1.8m. Spread 1.8m. Flowers from June to July. Deciduous.

  • Styrax japonicus

    Japanese Snowbell. A graceful spreading tree with glossy green leaves, turning yellow or red in autumn. Pretty bell-shaped white flowers produced along the undersides of the branches from early to mid-summer. Height 10m. Spread 8m. Flowers from June to July. Deciduous. Hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.
