Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

    Gulfstream is a very vigorous variety of dwarf compact Nandina. Foliage is slightly flatter and larger than many other compact versions, and winter colour is a very good red colour. The winter colours intensity will vary from an intense red colour, to a mixture of red & green. Summer foliage is a dark metallic blue green colour, and extremely dense. One very nice feature of Gulfstream Nandina is that it does not tend to spread through sucker shoots like many other Nandina cultivars.

  • Nandina domestica Gulf Stream Rubra

    This dwarf heavenly bamboo adds variety and texture to the garden. The fresh green leaves that adorn this evergreen shrub turn brilliant scarlet in winter, creating a bold focal point in the winter garden. 3ft x 3ft.

  • Nandina domestica Twilight

    Foliage is bronze and bright green heavily variegated with white and emerges in spring with a sultry pink glow. Evergreen, Sprays of small white flowers in summer.

  • Olearia x haastii

    Daisy Bush. A dense bushy shrub with glossy, dark green leaves and dense clusters of daisy-like, white flowers with a yellow eye from mid to late summer. Height 1.2m. Spread 1.2m. Flowers from July to August. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Osmanthus armatus Burkwoodii

    This smaller leaved Osmanthus has distinctive dark foliage and a dense form, making it ideal as a screening plant or as a dark foil plant at the back of the flower border. Attractive trumpets of white scented blossom during the autumn months provided extra impact and a deep pungent scent.

  • Osmanthus heterophyllus Goshiki

    A dense rounded shrub with holly-like, glossy, dark green leaves variegated creamy white and clusters of fragrant tubular white flowers. Height 1.8m. Spread 1.8m. Flowers from August to September. Fruits from September Evergreen.

  • Osmanthus heterophyllus Tricolor

    A dense rounded shrub with holly-like, glossy, dark green, white and pink leaves and clusters of fragrant tubular white flowers. Height 2m. Spread 2m. Flowers from September to November. Fruits from November Evergreen. Frost hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Parrotia persica Persian Spire

    Persian Ironwood. A spreading slightly weeping tree grown manly for its rich yellow, orange and purple-red autumn colour. Tiny spider-like red flowers in late winter to early spring. Height 1.8m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from February to March. Deciduous.

  • Philadelphus coronarius Aureus

    Mock Orange. Broadly upright deciduous shrub with ovate shallow toothed leaves. Produces semi-double milk white flowers in in mid-summer.

  • Philadelphus Lemoinei

    A smaller philadelphus but producing equally scented white blooms with yellow centres. The leaves are slightly longer an covered in fine hair. Excellent early summer scent for the smaller garden. Deciduous.

  • Philadelphus Manteau d'Hermine

    Dwarf Mock Orange. An arching shrub with clusters of double, very fragrant, creamy white flowers. Height 75cm. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from June to July. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Philadelphus Minnesota Snowflake

    Mock Orange. Medium sized shrub with double fragrant white flowers June-July. Deciduous. Hardy. Full sun. Prune after flowering. Height 1.5m.

  • Philadelphus Snowbelle

    ‘Snowbelle’ is a compact mock orange cultivar that is noted for its abundant bloom of fragrant, double white flowers in late spring to early summer. This is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with an upright habit that typically grows to only 3-4’ tall and as wide. Citrus-scented, double white flowers (1” diameter) appear in clusters in late spring. Oval, dark green leaves (to 2” long). Common name refers to the sweetly fragrant flowers which, in single form, generally resemble orange blossoms.

  • Philadelphus Starbright

    Mock Orange. An upright shrub with green leaves mottled yellow and clusters of single very fragrant. white flowers. Height 2.4m. Spread 2m. Flowers from June to July. Deciduous.

  • Philadelphus x virginalis

    Mock Orange. An upright shrub with clusters of double very fragrant pure white flowers. Flowers from June to July. Deciduous.

  • Phlomis fruticosa

    Jerusalem Sage. A mound-forming. shrub with grey-green leaves. woolly beneath and dark golden yellow flowers in early and mid-summer. Height 1m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from June to July. Evergreen.   • Phormium Apricot Queen

    Yellow leaves overlaid with apricot, edged dark green/bronze.

  • Phormium Black Beauty

    A striking form of flax that teams well with silver foliage. Used in the back of plantings will create a sense of depth. For best effect use in mass plantings in borders. Suitable for coastal gardens and containers. Best grown in full sun or part shade. Prefers good drainage.

  • Phormium Black Velvet

    Produces a good clump of erect, stiff and fine leaves at the earliest possible growth stage. Colour is blackish dark grey green, which is impossible to describe in words. 'Black Velvet' is extremely stiff with narrow arching leaves.
