Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Skimmia japonica Winnie's Dwarf

    Winnie’s Dwarf is a dwarf, slow growing skimmia with evergreen, leathery, broadly elliptic, glossy, and deep green leaves. In early spring tiny flowers come out and if pollinated by pollen from male plants they produce abundance of rich red, glossy, berries (not edible). This variety forms a low mound or cushion, and requires no pruning.

  • Sorbaria sorbifolia Gem

    Beautiful young foliage tinged with pink and white flower plumes in midsummer. A hardy, medium sized, shrub for most soils. Grows well in sun or light shade.

  • Sorbus aucuparia Apricot Queen

    Mountain Ash. Rowan. A rounded tree with greyish downy winter buds that open to dark green leaves, turning red or yellow in autumn. Clusters of white flowers in late spring are followed by apricot yellow berries in large bunches. Height 7m. Spread 4m. A small variety.

  • Spiraea arguta

    Bridal Wreath. Foam of May. A dense rounded shrub with bright green leaves. Saucer-shaped white flowers in spring. Height 1.2m spread 1m.

  • Spiraea arguta Compacta

    Bridal Wreath. Foam of May. Compact, deciduous, arching dense shrub, with white flowers mid-late spring. Hardy. Height & spread 1m.

  • Spiraea japonica Gold Flame

    A dense shrub with bronze-red young leaves, turning bright yellow then mid-green. Clusters of dark pink flowers from mid to late summer. Height 75cm. Spread 75cm. Flowers from July to August. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Spiraea japonica Golden Princess

    A dense shrub with bronze-red young leaves later bright yellow, turning red in autumn. Clusters of bright purplish pink flowers from mid to late summer. Height 60-90cm. Spread 60-90cm. Flowers from July to August. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Spiraea japonica Goldmound

    A dwarf compact shrub with rich yellow foliage. Clusters of pink flowers from mid to late summer. Height 50cm. Spread 50cm.

  • Spiraea japonica Magic Carpet

    A new dwarf spiraea with red leaf tips above a backdrop of bright gold foliage. Pinkish-purple flowers in summer and you have season long interest. Great used as a ground cover! Full sun for best colour. 12-18 inches tall.

  • Spiraea nipponica June Bride

    Hardy deciduous shrub with dense, arching branches. Its one of the early varieties, grown for its mass of small dainty white flowers and arching stems that appear from late spring to early summer.

  • Spiraea nipponica Snowmound

    An arching shrub with rounded dark green leaves. Clusters of white flowers cover the plant in mid-summer. Height 1.8m. Spread 1.8m. Flowers from June to July. Deciduous.

  • Spiraea x vanhouttei

    A compact bushy shrub with arching stems of dark green leaves. Clusters of white flowers in early summer. Height 2m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from May to June. Deciduous. Hardy. Planting instructions Back-fill with soil mixed with peat and a suitable fertiliser.

  • Stewartia pseudocamellia

    A narrow tree with attractive cinnamon coloured flaking bark. Finely toothed dark green leaves turn orange, yellow and red in autumn. Pretty cup-shaped white flowers in mid-summer. Height 20m. Spread 8m. Flowers from June to July. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Syringa Josee

    Common Lilac. A lovely dense compact shrub, prolific in bloom and delightfully fragrant. Masses of lilac flowers, held in panicles during May and June. Attractive rounded leaves of velvety dark green.
