Planting new trees and shrubs is not a difficult job, but one to get right, if you want your new plants to have the best start in life. The most important considerations are root establishment and health, weather, soil conditions and aftercare. To support early root establishment, we recommend using farmyard manure to assist root stimulation and healthy growth. 

This advice is suitable for all trees and shrubs, whether containerised, bare-root or rootballed:

Planting is best done between October and April. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year, but are easier to care for if planted in Autumn or Winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in Spring or Summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in Autumn and Winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible, then they can be heeled in (temporary planting in soil or compost to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible.

Problems: Planting too deep is a common cause of tree death. Aim to plant at the same depth that the tree was growing in the nursery. Poor establishment and brown leaves are also sometimes encountered after planting.

  • Syringa vulgaris Sensation

    Large shrub with heart shaped leaves producing heavenly scented soft pink, huge flower panicles in May and June. Prefers sunny position.

  • Syringa vulgaris Violacea

    Common Lilac. A half standard tree with clusters of fragrant, double, dark red wine flowers in late spring and early summer. Large shrub. Flowers from May to June. Deciduous. A popular choice.

  • Syringa x prestoniae Miss Japan

    Hardy, late-flowering hybrid lilac that produces pleasingly perfumed rose-pink buds opening to pink flowers. Miss Japan Lilac forms a shrub 10 feet high by 8 feet wide with arching branches covered in deep, dark green foliage.

  • Tamarix gallica

    Tamarisk. A large. spreading. glamorous shrub or small tree with dark purple-brown branches and sea-green foliage. Flowers during summer, pink, crowded into lax, cylindrical racemes on shoots of the current year.

  • Tamarix parviflora

    Tamarix. An arching shrub with needle-like leaves. Light pink flowers in mid and late spring or early summer. Height 3m. Spread 3m. Flowers from May to June. Deciduous. Hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Tamarix ramosissima Pink Cascade

    Tamarix. A graceful shrub with arching branches. Rich pink flowers in dense clusters on the new stems in late summer and early autumn. Height 5m. Spread 5m.

  • Tamarix tetranda

    Tamarix. An arching shrub with needle-like leaves. Light pink flowers in mid and late spring or early summer. Height 3m. Spread 3m. Flowers from May to June. Deciduous. Hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Tetrapanax papyrifer Rex

    An immensely impressive foliage, spectacularly massive with great claw like lobes. Grow it in a sheltered site where it should reach 4m. It will be fairly hardy there but will shoot strongly from the roots if cut back.

  • Trachycarpus fortunei Chamaerops excelsa

    Chusan Palm. A single-stemmed palm with large fan-shaped dark green leaves. Small yellow flowers emerge close to the leaf bases in early summer. The hardiest palm in Britain. Height 20m. Spread 2.5m. Flowers from June. Evergreen. Frost hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Ulmus minor Jacqueline Hillier

    Elm. A rounded bushy, suckering shrub with double-toothed small leaves. Height 2.5m. Spread 2.5m. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Viburnum carlcephalum

    A rounded shrub with dark green leaves, turning red in autumn. Clusters of fragrant, white flowers open from pink buds in late spring. Height 3m. Spread 3m. Flowers from April to May. Deciduous.

  • Viburnum carlesii

    A bushy shrub with dark green leaves turning red in autumn. Very fragrant white or white flushed pink flowers, opening from pink buds. Flowers from April to May. Fruit colour Black. Fruits from June. Deciduous.

  • Viburnum carlesii Aurora

    A bushy shrub with dark green leaves turning red in autumn. Very fragrant pink flowers, opening from red buds from mid to late spring followed by black fruit. Height 2m. Spread 2m. Hardy.

  • Viburnum carlesii Juddii

    A bushy shrub with dark green leaves. bronze when young, turning red in autumn. Small tubular pale pink, fragrant flowers in tight heads in mid spring. 1.2m x 1m. Deciduous.

  • Viburnum cinnamomifolium

    A rounded shrub with veined, dark green leaves. Loose clusters of white flowers in early summer, followed by blue-black fruit. Height 5m. Spread 5m. Flowers from June to July. Fruits from July. Evergreen. Hardy. Shelter from cold drying winds.

  • Viburnum davidii Angustifolium

    A bushy shrub with veined. dark green leaves. Clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring, followed by metallic-blue fruit. Height 1m. Spread 1m. Flowers from May to June. Fruits from June Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Viburnum odoratissimum Arboricola

    A bushy semi evergreen shrub with leathery, glossy dark green leaves. Clusters of white flowers to 10cm across opening from pink buds in late spring. Height 1.5m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from May to June. Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Viburnum odoratissimum Coppertop

    A wonderful, newly introduced, compact red-topped fragrant Viburnum, perfect for adding foliage interest and perfume to your garden. As young, copper-red foliage matures to darker green, white flowers emerge with scented pops of fragrance.

  • Viburnum opulus Roseum

    Snowball Bush. A British native shrub with dark green leaves turning red in autumn. Large white round snowball flowers in May or June followed by fleshy bright red fruit. Height 5m. Spread 4m. Flowers from May to June. Fruits from July. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Viburnum plicatum Kilimanjaro Sunrise

    Winner of the Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year Award 2015. Hardy. It produces an abundance of pure white flowers in attractive clusters from early summer, followed by pink-red berries in late summer to early autumn.

  • Viburnum plicatum Mariesii

    A bushy shrub with tiered branches. Dark green leaves turn purple-red in autumn. White flowers in late spring. Height 3m. Spread 4m. Architectural plant.

  • Viburnum plicatum Pink Beauty

    A bushy shrub with deeply veined, dark green leaves, purple-red in autumn. Pretty white flowers mature to pink in late spring. Height 3m. Spread 4m. Flowers from May to June. Deciduous.

  • Viburnum plicatum St Keverne

    Large and broad-growing cultivar of doublefile viburnum sports flattened white and ivory clusters of blooms in mid-spring. Each flower cluster is made up of large bracted white (sterile) blossoms and in the center are the small, fertile ivory blossoms. The colourful fruits that developed are bright red and then black once ripe. Leaves are a deep green and are oval with teeth on the edges and furrowed veins. Fall foliage is purplish red.

  • Viburnum plicatum Watanabe

    A compact shrub with deeply veined, dark green leaves, purple-red in autumn. White flowers from late spring to autumn. Height 2m. Spread 1.5m. Flowers from May to September. Deciduous. Hardy.

  • Viburnum rhytidophyllum

    Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price' is an excellent evergreen shrub that flowers in winter. It is quite compact, with dense dark green foliage, and from late winter through spring, for a long time, it carries flattened heads of many tiny, star-shaped flowers, opening from pink buds and followed by dark bluish black fruit.

  • Viburnum tinus Gwenllian

    Laurustinus. A compact shrub with dark green leaves. Clusters of pink-flushed, white flowers open from dark pink buds, from late winter to spring, followed by dark blue-black fruit. Height 3m. Spread 3m. Flowers from February to May. Fruits from June Evergreen. Hardy.

  • Viburnum tinus Lisa Rose

    Viburnum Tinus Lisa Rose is an excellent winter flowering bushy evergreen which has mid green glossy leaves. Flat white flower heads are produced from November to May.

  • Viburnum tinus Spirit

    A good evergreen shrub that has flowers and berries giving a long season of interest. Pink buds open to white star-shaped flowers in spring followed by blue-black fruits in autumn. Approx. 2m x 2m. Sun or part-shade in any reasonable soil not too wet. Ideal for the smaller garden or border.

  • Viburnum x bodnantense Charles Lamont

    An upright shrub with dark green leaves. bronze when young. Fragrant, tubular pure pink flowers, on bare stems from late autumn to spring. Height 3m. Spread 2m. Flowers from November to April. Deciduous. Hardy.
